Why can't the Global Scale be automatically set?
Posted by: johnswafford - 06-20-2007, 10:51 AM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (4)

I'm back using DreamScape after about 2 years without touching it (this is my first time using v2.5), and I'm puzzled as to why DS uses a manually set Global Scale setting rather than simply taking care of this automatically according to the current system unit/scale settings. As described in the DreamScape docs, the Global Scale setting is used for scaling atmospheric properties to match DreamScape's internal units of meters.

I've become deeply immersed in MaxScript since I last used DreamScape, and in one of my scripts I've used the #worldUnits display type for a "spinner" user-interface item. This essentially does this exact conversion for my script so that the user sees and sets the units they've chosen in 3ds max preferences, while my script works with the actual 3ds max system units.

I seems strange that I can do this myself for free in my own scripts, but a $600 commercial plugin like DreamScape won't automate this simple conversion. I don't think users should have to constantly convert the various dimensions in their heads when using a plugin of this caliber, especially when 3ds max and even MaxScript are set up to make this automatic.

one file is coming back with "error message e:\max6sdk\includer9\point3.h #196"

we have no e drives here. and i found a post on the autodesk site about point2.h

it says the 1.0a should fix it but in the fume update list on this site it says a fix for point2, not 3. is this a known issue?

Transition between subsurface and above surface
Posted by: Steve Green - 06-18-2007, 04:57 PM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (5)

Hi,

I've been doing a couple of shots recently which involved the camera breaking the surface, slowly.

Now, I have a slight problem where the SSS effect will just disappear to black as it moves across sea level, and I wondered if there was anything that can be done to fix this?

I tried changing the step level, and raising the SSS sea level, but nothing seems to fix it? Anyone else come across this kind of effect?

Thanks,

Steve

  Freeze the simulation
Posted by: jedihopper - 06-15-2007, 01:01 PM - Forum: FumeFX [max] - Replies (5)

Hi
Is it possible to "freeze" the simulation, let say at frame 70, and have it freezed so I can render a camera going around it and the smoke is freezed in the 3d world. Hope my question make sense.

3dsmax closes when using Dreamscape preview (DirectX 9.0c)..
Posted by: clayton - 06-15-2007, 06:05 AM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (13)

Hello,

Is there a problem when using Dreamscape 2.5c and DirectX 9.0c (3dsmax9 64-bit).

1. Created a Dreamscape Sun
2. Added the dreamscape module
3. Clicked the preview button, moved the cloud display around and hit the refresh menu item (no problems).
4. Added a camera and switched to camera view
5. Repeated the preview and after a couple of refreshes 3dsmax closes completely.

I don't have any problems using OpenGL.

One Dreamscape Sea Surface, multiple cameras
Posted by: dave_s - 06-14-2007, 11:25 PM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (5)

I have a scene with three cameras all trying to use an adaptive sea surface mesh at the same time. How do I remove a camera from the adaptive selection so I can add a new camera? Thanks in advance.

  Cloud Altitude Parameter...
Posted by: clayton - 06-11-2007, 09:30 PM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (3)

Hello,

Can someone please tell me how the altitude parameter works when using 3dsmax metric units:

1. I set the units to be metric
2. Created a Dreamscape scene and left the default cloud altitude to 2000.0m

To my knowledge this should be the height of the clouds above ground level in metres, ie. 2000m from the ground plane, ie. xyz: 0,0,0

I created a cylinder with a height of 2000m at 0,0,0 and placed my camera at the top of this, expecting the cloud cover to intersect the cylinder. Instead the render shows the top of the cylinder and the rest of the background is black. I then had to reduce the height of the camera to approx z=50m in order intersect the cloud layer.

Can someone explain why ?

  Dreamscape?Max freeze
Posted by: andyjhunter - 06-07-2007, 04:23 PM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (7)

I've been using Dreamscape for a few years now and generally have no problems but the last two jobs I've done with it I've run into an odd problem. While rendering an animated sequence Dreamscape will freeze/lockup on a specific scanline of a specific frame. The resulting freeze can only be broken by ctrl-alt-deleting out of Max.

When this happens in an animation the frame number and the scanline where the freeze happens is consistent and repeatable, for example it might be frame 78 and scanline 300 (of 486). In another animation it might be frame 200 and scanline 50. But in each animation it will always be that scanline on that frame, it doesn't matter if it's rendering as part of a sequence or individually. It doesn't matter if it's rendered locally or on the network. It doesn't even matter if I try to render the image in regions.

Also frames before and after the "freeze" frame render just fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

  missing tutorial codec
Posted by: andyjhunter - 06-07-2007, 04:08 PM - Forum: DreamScape - Replies (3)

I've downloaded the Dreamscape video tutorials but when I try to play them Windows Media Player says it doesn't have and can't find the correct video codec. Does anyone know what codec they use and where I can download it?

Thanks
