Large Scale Fumefx Sims - Render Time Problems

Hi Guys,

I'm developing some large scale fumefx sims in Maya and really hitting a wall with my render times and quality settings. I've had smaller scale sims with much higher detail and lighting render faster than my current project and wondering if anyone might have insight into my render issues. Im linking a Playblast of my simulation and the screen caps of my settings.

here is a sample of my first frame. 1920x1080 took 1 hour to render and the AA isnt high enough at this point to smooth and remove the crunchy detail. Each of my render nodes is 2.4 Ghz Dual Xeons / 48 gigs of ram

Hi Encore,

you dont need Use Maya Vol Sampling, since you dont have any kind of object in the scene, except fume, if i can see right...

Use Maya Vol Sampling should be On in case you have obj in the scene that need to interact/matte with fume, when you turn off this option i think that your render time will cut down a lot.

for AA u can use Legacy Sampling Node, Adaptive sampling -1/1 or 0/2, should be fine

Hello,

Without Illumination Map enabled, brute-force shadows are very slow to compute.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did manage to get my simulation times down alot. With Maya volume sampling disabled it rendered much faster and I did utilize illumination mapping and that cut the render time down as well.

Hi Encore,

I think this is very nice sim!
Would you be so kind to share this file with me because I'm having a very hard time to
get a large smoke plume like this. How did you pull this off? Are you working in cm or meter?
