ok, but doesn't it seem strange then, that the directional light takes that much longer to render? I mean I understand that an area light takes longer to render, but the directional light should be about the same speed as a spotlight.
As for GI - I am aware that in vray fumefx can't receive GI from surrounding geometry, still the volume should not render black as it receives direct lighting.

The light rendering speed depends on the VRay light implementation - FumeFX uses the same call for all the light types.
FumeFX cannot receive GI from geometry - that would work only with Arnold (thanks to its implementation).
