For this I would just use a geometry with a looping flame texture mapped on it.
FumeFX is better for fire with many flames and turbulent motion in it.
But if you want your torch to look more like a dancing flame in the beginning, you could use fumeFX. when you want the flame to get straight, just use a simple source with strong directional velocity and set turbulence and vorticity to zero as a starting point. Also set the emiter turbulence to zero.
