I dont have max here but what is the resolution of your grid?
I've noticed some of my sims on some of my older boxes that only have 4gb of ram (I noticed you have 3) like to die after a while if the res is higher than 180~. Of course you can adjust that with the iterations and optimize things down a bit, but the more ram the better in most situations.
Try also doing garbage dumps helps free memory a little bit (not much) like gc() in maxscript listener
What type of resolution are you simming? (next to the step size in the general tab)
