i dunno why u should increase density, but ur right concerning the velocity. the less iterations r used for sim, the more the fluid can continue to move straight, while many iterations will give u more detail through swirls, that also cause the fluid to slow down faster. its the same with vorticity: the higher the value, the more the fluid tends to be turbulent inside and this simply cost speed. it cant keep direction...
u have to keep that in mind, then u can work quite well with lower and higher res sims.
