do I understand it correct, your smoke does not show up or render?

try using higher denstiy and opacity. in some cases(I myself think it has to do with the scene scale) you need really high or low settings to get same results as in other scenes.

Have you tried turning the source smoke to 0 and check the "Fuel Creates Smoke" checkbok, then mess with the density?

Im not sure of your setup, I just mean on your object/simple or particle source set the smoke amount to 0 so the only smoke that occurs is from burnt fuel.
Dont forget if you use "Fuel Creates Smoke" the density is determined by how much fuel is being burnt (source fuel amount and burn rate (assuming temp is enough to ignite the fuel)) multiplied by the "Fuel Creates Smoke" Smoke Density.
What is your source fuel amount, burn rate and "Fuel Creates Smoke" Smoke Density?

This will only be of use if smoke has been simulated by turning up the density of the smoke in the source or the simulation tab

i think i have an idea of whats happening.. but again i m just guessing.. always share a file dude.. its much more simpler and faster to get proper feedback..
anyway.. wild guess :

you turned Fuel generate smoke on with a high density , but the Rollout below ( simulate smoke ) is Not checked ? cause you need to have this on the system side checked in order for Fume to compute Smoke ..
