Cache Map to disk is their for a simple reason :
When you want to re-render the same Camera view from the Same Sims again and again , you do not need to Recalculate Illumination map .. if you check this checkbox , it will calculate it once and next time you hit re-render again , it should not recalculate it but read the IM from the Cached File on your local hardrive..
thats the idea behind this..

Dont Wonder too much ..
-FM is a Worldspace Map displacing through the Fluid Flow .
-Understand IM as a Shadow Map Baking Solution and reprojection in the volume..Think of it from the light maybe ?
