I'm trying to retime an explosion WT cache that required up close to the maximum ram to sim on this node. The WT cache has all the necessary channels for retiming both fire and smoke. The RT sim crashes and runs out of ram. Ram usage for the WT sim was about 68GB out of 72GB max. The RT sim runs up to the full 72GB and 3dsmax crashes. Does the RT process require more than the WT sim did to calculate? I also have 'minimize' and some exclude channels active for the RT. Running 3dsmax 2015 and Ffx 4.0. Thanks in advance.
We have also tried setting the page file to 150GB - a bit over 2x the ram. Recall this from back in the day however not sure if that still matters or if Windows should handle page file regarding FumeFX ram usage. At least with this set, we get a prompt before 3dsmax fast-exits after crashing.
If RT requires more ram than the WT sim, how much more? What would the math come out to?
Also, we recall there being a checkbox for allowing Fume to swap to disk? We don't see that in the Preferences anymore, or did I imagine it being there many revisions ago? We'd be willing to wait for this sim to swap if it would complete the RT pass.
Or maybe a way to RT sim first and then run WT sim?
Hello,
Retiming uses more memory than the simulation and it depends what you're retiming as retiming has to have current and previous caches in memory.
In task manager you can see current memory allocation.
Swap to disk has been removed since that is the task that the OS should handle.
Running retimer and then WT would not work.

Hi Kresimir,
Thanks for the response. I guess my Windows OS is failing me. I've set the swap to differing amounts up to 2x the ram max and as soon as the sim hit 72GB (the maximum), 3dsmax crashed before swapping to disk. I'm not sure why. I know we're discussing the RT, then WT sim in another thread.
Thanks very much.
Best,
Brian
You're welcome.
We can at least try to sort it out so that when Windows runs out of the memory, everything stops instead of crash.
