Whats the best PC for siming fumefx?
#1
Hi everyone
I am wondering what would be the ideal machine to sim fume fx, like CPu and memory wise.
I've heard someone speaking of i7 950 since it would be faster than a dual xeon or opteron, so if someone could clear this out for me would be awesome Smile
also, would loads of ram speed up the process? I currently have 12 gigs, but it really chugs my machine when i render sims that go above 1k or 2 k of ram, so would a 64 gig machine also help speeding up the process?

please let me know Smile thank you very much

Hello,

We have i7's 920 and 950 and those systems work very nice.
As for the amount of memory - it really depends on how much detail you want to get and how long are you willing to wait for the simualtion to end. 32Gb of memory works fine for us.

Hi, so this would be an ideal processor?
http://www.amazon.de/Intel-Core-3-06GHz ... 544&sr=8-1

unless i got the wrong model..it does seem a bit cheap

Looks good to me, but you might first ask users how 6 core Intel is doing with FumeFX and check other options as well.
However, more cores does not mean proportionally faster computations.

Well i sure notice that the more memory the merrier for the sims, i work with only 16 GB, it does the trick most of the time but you do need to be creative to optimize simulation time, lots of partitioning required, and you want to avoid FFX to start writing to your disk using virtual memory when choking on the RAM, it's an absolute killer, especially if you work on network drive like i do :$ it will crank up your sim time insanely. My advise, buy a LOT of RAM, and a lot of fast local storage drives, too often my sims get slowed down by the time it taes to write large sim files onto the disks (sometimes several gigs per frame!).

Cheers, A.
