Dreamscape attaching engine to object

I want to use the engine to move a boat and create a wake. I have the tutorial scene with the boat wake. And another video tutorial that says to attach engine to object but does not say how. I assume its select and link button. Can someone tell me if this is correct? If not please tell me the correct way.
