Is this possible to do? we have a number of large sims cached as fxd, but now we need to render them in the V-Ray volume grid. Is it possible to convert sims cached as an fxd sequence to a vdb without simming again?

you can convert between cache file format by using Post Processing. Just link your .fxd caches to default output path, and change retimer (post processing) path to .vdb format. You may also need to change output range start and end frame. Run Post Processing and you will have your caches converted to .vdb format.

That's great! Just what I need, thanks.
This works, but you need to sim with extra detail or the post solver won't start. You can just set the re-timer to 1 and it converts frame to frame.
This is great as we can work in fxd for as long as possible and then convert to vdb for lighting
