boat problem
#1
Hello friends !

I do have a scene file where a hull of a boat drives along the sea.
I works fine with my first boat I've used, but for some reason with my second boat it will not work.

Here is the animation, see the problem:
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/boat.avi

The second boat is always sinking.

The second boat is a little bit smaller, I had to scale down the boat a little bit, to fit the my original size.

I use the same settings like I did for my first boat, but now I don't know how I can fix that problem.

Can someone help me out here ?
Oh yes, I've used Dreamscape SeaSurface, Dymaics and the Engine.

Here is the scene file to download:
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/boat.zip

it's max9.

thank you so much for every little help,
bernhard

Hi bernhard

I've had a look at your scene. The first thing I did was to reset the xform on the boat from there you can start again. If you are changing the size of the object it's a good idea to change the weight and the force on the engine. That mesh is very highly detailed to use just for testing. Use a proxy mesh.

Hope this helps.

Hello playford and thank you for your reply.

Well, I've tried it again with a proxy, but I couldn't fix my problem.

the boat is still sinking:

Animation:

Now, I decided to start a new scene file, without any engine.
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/Start_001.zip

Just to bring my boat on to the water.
I've used my proxy mesh, imported it into my scene file, scaled it, and used RESET XFROM.

I think before I should use the ENGINE, I should get sure, that my boat interacts with the water, like a boat should do normally: it should swim on the sea.

after that I will go to use the engine.
hmm, but my boat is still sinking, and now I really recognized everything.

I can't figure out the problem, or which settings I do have wrong.
I've tried to change the weight etc.. ut if it should be real, the boat has about 200kg.

thank ou for every little help,
Bernhard

you need to move the boat into the dynamics daemon first off.

You also need to give your water surface a width.

I have been playing with the setting and you can get the boat to float by firstly doing to 2 things above then adjusting to water density.

thank you Mark for your fast reply, I really appreciate that much.

I've checked my scene file, and well, the boat is in the dynamics deamon, here is a snapshot of my settings:

About the sea surface:
I used in this case the adaptive mesh, and I set the settings from the width to 0, so it would be optimized and saving calculating ressources. that means,it will not work with adpative mesh, width is set to 0 ?

thx and best greetings,
bernhard

When I opened your file the back end of the boat was not in the daemon.

Like I said in the email, you can adjust the water density to get the boat to float.

I'm not too sure about the adaptive mesh, I'm not an expert using dreamscape. I just know a little. Maybe Kresimer can shed a bit more light on it.

thank you for all your efforts Mark, I really appreciate that.
Okay I also fixed now the Daemon, and now the boat is inside.

@Water Density:
Hmm, I wouldn't change the water density, because in real life it wouldn't change too. It doesn't matter, if I would use a bootle or a big ship.

I've experimented with the weight again, and could make a little progress.
I will let you know more about my research work,
my goal is to work with Dreamscape, so everything works I do need.

I am pretty sure, there must be a solution.
Hear from you and thank you very much,
bernhard

okay, I could find out, that the XForm Reset is very important, you have to do that if you scale the object.

About the sinking ship. I just scaled the 2nd boat a little bit, but that also decreased the weight, I didn't change. Hmm, It seems to be, that this value is very accurate. On my first boat, I've used 200kg.

The second boat, is not the half from the first, but it works best with 50% of the weight from the 1st boat, so I've used 100kg.

the boat is now on the water, it's not sinking any more, here is the image:

as you can see, I have the boat now on the water, but the next challenge is to get the boat horizontal to the sea surface. I really have no clue, what I have to change, and which point is responsible for that.

Is it the pivot point from the object ?
or is it just the shape of the object ?
or is it anything else ?

To see the problem much better, here the animation:
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/front_in_water.avi

the front of the boat is under water.... uff... what I can do ? Confusedhock:

thx,
bernhard

Hi bernhard

Glad to see your getting on a bit better, I've always found with dreamscape to change the settings slighty and you can get drastic results.
As for the pivot, think where a speed boat would move if it were at high speed and set the pivot there. Maybe around 1 fifth of the way from the back and a little below the water line.

Have fun playing

Hello folks !

Okay, I will test more and more, and hopefully this thread can help other people too. Here my next progress.

It's really the pivot point, that is responsible how the boat swims in the water. Of course, if you selected Center of Pivot point should be the pivot point.

Here a test animation again:
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/pivot.avi

I also could find out, that my first dummy was wrong with my pivot points. Look at the animation, you see one boat is okay, but the second one capsize.

okay, I think more comes tomorrow.

Hello guys, I am very happy now, because my boat is driving now with the engine. That means, if the setup at first is correct, it's also no problem with the engine.

DOWNLOAD ANIMATION:
http://www.bernhardrieder.com/ask/driving.avi

But now, I am thinking about, how I can steer my boat ?
What do you think guys ?

Do I have to animate the engine ?
Or what do I have to animate, that the boat is driving from Point A accurate to Point B.

Hmm, would be great if someoen has an idea.
thx a lot and best greetings,
bernhard

Glad your getting on ok Bernhard, animation looks good!

I think to animate the engine would be a good way to go, It will get the results you need. Or you could not use dynamics and have the boat going along a path.

Hope this helps!
