Continuous crash when using wavelet turbulence

hi there i'm trying to use wavelet turbulence. Per the basic tutorial in the help file here is what i'm doing.

maya 2015 create new fumefx container with simple emitter

goto "extra detail" drop down and set to wavelet turbulence simulate 50 frames.

Then set sim mode to wavelet and simulate again. It looks like it does about one frame then crashes. happens every time in Maya 2015 or 2016.

Auto sync paths is set to ON. Any ideas?

possibly.. it's a little different... but I just ordered the upgrade so hopefully that will fix everything.
