FumeFX 2010 Error Loading DLLs
#1
Hi,

I uninstalled all Afterworks plugins for 3ds Max 2009 and also uninstalled 3ds Max 2009 (32-bit).
I then downloaded and installed Dreamscape, FumeFX, and AfterBurn for 3ds Max 2010 (32-bit). DreamScape and AfterBurn appear to be working correctly, but 3ds Max is reporting an error when trying to load a DLL for FumeFX (this occurs during the 3ds Max splash screen):

DLL
failed to initialize.
Error code 126 - The specified module could not be found.

I'm not sure what module this dialog is referring to. I checked that the DLO file listed above exists, and it does.

I press OK on this dialog box and then 3ds Max continues to load normally, but then another error occurs when the UI appears:

File Error:
Could not open file FumeFx.ini for writing.
Global preferences will not be saved.

I press OK, and then I can continue using 3ds Max.

The installers that I used are:
AfterBurn40bR2010.exe
DreamScape25eR2010.exe
FumeFX12R2010.exe

I did try uninstalling FumeFX (I initially installed it in custom mode and selected all of the components), and then I reinstalled FumeFX using the recommended configuration. Both installation attempts result in the same behavior listed above.

I'm using Vista Ultimate (SP1, 32-bit, all updates), and 3ds Max 2010 (32-bit).

Thanks a bunch for any help or FYIs.

Hi,

this is the same thing I'm getting - I'm wondering if the installer is putting the wrong version in (32 bit in the 64 bit install)

Back to 2009 for me for the moment.

Cheers

Same problem here. Uninstalled 2009, installed 2010, same error.
I am using Vista64, installed only 64 bit versions.

Did anyone find a workaround for this behavior? I tried downloading the FumeFX installer a couple of days ago hoping for an update, but it did the same thing.

Thanks a bunch for any FYIs.

Same here.

Resolution:
If you move the FumeFX_PF.dlo back to its original location (pre ver 1.2) the error will be resolved.

\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\plugins\Afterworks\FumeFX

Hello,

This error can happen if inside plugin.ini /afterworks/optional is listed before afterworks/commom and afterworks/FumeFX

I'll check installation script as it seems this could happen in some cases.

This was the case here. I manually edited plugin.ini and the error is gone.

I'm getting sort of this same behavior but with 3dsmax2011 and the fumefx upgrade. The plugin.ini seems in order and the install went fine.

I'm not getting the first error, but I am getting the bit about fumefx.ini and global writing.

Any ideas?

Michael,

What is exactly the error you're getting ?
If about FumeFX.ini - please check if it's not read-only, or maybe UAC causes this.

Hi Kresimir,

The exact message I'm getting is upon starting Max 2011:
Could not open file FumeFx.ini for writing.
Global preferences will not be saved.

I've done a search on my system and I can't even find fumefx.ini!

What was a result of disabling UAC ?
